Vincenzo Colleoni (Italian, 19th century)"Cleopatra's Banquet" (inspired by Tiepolo's fresco in the Palazo Labia, Venice) / Signed lower right: V. ColleoniAlthough conceived to look just like a tapestry, this piece is strictly speaking to be defined as a wall hanging in that the image is painted onto a blank woven ground, rather than woven into it. Such objects were made almost exclusively by the Italians in the late 19th century at a time when genuine tapestry weaving was all but defunct. / Little is known of Vincenzo Colleoni's life but he is recorded as a genre painter born in Padua who exhibited in Parma, Naples and Venice where he seems to have spent most of his life. / The subject may have been inspired by the magnificent frescoes by Tiepolo about Antony and Cleopatra commissioned for the Palazzo Labia in Venice. Stylistically Coleoni has emulated the work of such Venetian artists as Veronese and Tipeolo in creating a baroque/rococo pastiche.
