INLAY To set into a surface, usually at the same level, to form a design. In furniture, a form of decoration the involves cutting small pieces of ivory, precious metals, mother-of-pearl or wood which are then fitted into small recesses of the same shape on a solid pieces of furniture to create a picture or pattern. See marquetry and parquetry. INTERLACE Decorative motif composed of intertwining bands. IONIC Greek and Roman order of architecture, distinguished by the double voluted capital. One of the early orders of architecture. The spreading scroll-shaped capital is the distinctive feature of the Ionic order; it was primarily a product of Asia Minor, where early embryonic forms of this capital have been found. In the Ionian colonies of Greece on the southwestern shores of Asia Minor, the Ionic order had attained a full development in the 6th century B.C. In the 5th century B.C. it appeared in Greece proper, where the Erechtheum embodies the one really complete example. ITALIANATE In the Italian manner refers to Renaissance details imposed upon regional styles in northern Europe in the late 16th century and beyond.
