Padouk from the Andaman Islands was called ?rosewood? in the 18th century. Rich crimson to brick red, with dark streaks. A particular type of Padouk found in the West Indies called ?Princes wood? in the 17th century was often found in inventories as a substitute for walnut, with light brown color and dark streaks. Also called amboyna. PALISANDER French name for rosewood. See also Rosewood. PURPLEHEART Another name for Amaranth, a tree indigenous to Brazil and Trinidad, with a very hard, durable brown wood, whose timbers display distinctive purples or deep violet shades when exposed to air, making it popular for marquetry.
